According to the scientific community, climate change is happening and its effects will have severe consequences for our society and environment. Reducing energy use in buildings is one of the most important ways to reduce humans’ overall environmental impact.

Optimizing massing and orientation by elongating the building along the east-west axis proved to be an effective strategy for both passive heating and cooling. The existing building on-site also used this strategy, so its re-use was proposed.
This project won third place in the Transformation 2030 student design competition in 2014. The design process is robust and well explained, and led to a compelling, high performing design that would help strengthen the community in the South Bronx.
