Challenge Summary

The goal of the Cradle to Cradle Design Challenge was to eliminate the concept of “waste” by designing products with materials that may be perpetually cycled to retain their value as nutrients to fuel growing global economies.

Design Summary & Considerations

Clothes hangers tend to be made of metal and plastic which possess significant embodied energy and retire to landfills. The Sway Fibre Hanger is manufactured from 100% recycled waste paper and can be 100% composted, making it a truly cradle-to-cradle product.

  • Materials Selection - Manufactured out of 100% recycled waste paper and sourced from municipal recycling centers ensures the other materials don’t contaminate the material supply. Made singularly of paper, the hanger is 100% compostable and biodegradable.
  • Product Lifecycle – At the end of the hanger’s useful life it can be recycled into the same wastepaper stream that originally supplied its own material. Because the hanger can be responsibly disposed of in a variety of ways, it ensures a positive impact on the environment.

Autodesk Fusion 360

Fusion 360 had a powerful impact on the de¬sign process for the Sway Fibre Hanger. The ability to share models seamlessly through the cloud, enabled the designers to rapidly iterate through numerous aesthetic and technical solutions.

Fusion 360 also allowed the designers to work remotely in parallel and then come together to make decisions. Both designers were more experienced with working on other CAD programs and because they owned different versions they were unable to share CAD files. However, Fusion 360 completely re¬solved that problem. Additionally, the Fusion 360 CAM tools were extremely intuitive and served to help keep strict mold-making schedules.

Because Fusion 360 incorporates both CAD and CAM software, there was no need to export the model to other software and tackle a new interface. Working in Fusion 360 provided a great experi¬ence for collaboration and quick design-to-production turn-around!
